Adjust to life at Northwestern University
Our special orientation programs focus on developing communicative and cultural competence for the US academic setting. Our unique blend of linguistic expertise and TGS support are combined in these language-centric orientation programs, helping new students during the transition to graduate study.
- English Development through Guided Exploration (EDGE) is an extra-curricular program designed to provide international graduate students with an opportunity to practice their English conversation skills with international and American peers. Students in this program participate in outings led by fellow students (Graduate Leaders). Students can choose the outings that fit best with their interests and schedule. Visit the EDGE site for more details.
- ELP Foundations This hybrid online/in-person program provides linguistic, emotional, academic and practical support to incoming Northwestern PhD and MFA students. Students admitted to the program will be enrolled in a five-week course offered online through Canvas: Foundations of American English and Academic Culture American English. Students will be able to interact with ELP staff and other matriculating students, while practicing their English skills and getting practical advice on integrating into an American university and the local culture. Visit the main ELP Foundations site for more information, application details, or to nominate your student.
- The Integrated Academic Skills program combines group instruction, individual tutoring, and online speech and language training to provide intensive instruction to entering PhD and MFA students who need the most support, during the fall and winter quarters of their first year on campus. Visit the Integrated Academic Skills site to see more information and program details.
